Your Guide to Gut Health

Your Guide to Gut Health

Your gut does a lot more than digest food. It influences your energy, your mood, your immune system — even how well you sleep. The good news: small, consistent choices make a real difference.

Here's what actually matters.

What Is Gut Health, Really?

Your digestive system is home to trillions of bacteria, fungi and microbes — collectively called the gut microbiome. When this community is diverse and balanced, things run smoothly. When it's out of balance, you start to feel it.

Signs your gut might need some attention:

  • 🫧 Bloating or digestive discomfort after meals
  • 😴 Persistent fatigue with no clear cause
  • 🧠 Brain fog or low mood
  • 🤧 Frequent colds or slow recovery
  • 🍬 Strong cravings for sugar or processed foods

Feed Your Gut Every Day

The single most impactful thing you can do? Eat more variety. Aim for 30 different plant foods per week — not 30 servings, just 30 different types. That includes vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds and herbs.

A few gut-friendly staples worth adding:

  • 🌾 Whole grains — oats, buckwheat, rye — feed beneficial bacteria
  • 🫘 Legumes — lentils, chickpeas, beans — rich in prebiotic fibre
  • 🥬 Dark leafy greens — spinach, kale — anti-inflammatory and fibre-dense
  • 🧄 Garlic & onion — powerful prebiotics hiding in plain sight
  • 🫚 Flaxseeds & chia — support gut lining and regularity

Probiotics vs Prebiotics — What's the Difference?

People often mix these up. Here's the short version:

Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria — found in fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi and miso.

Prebiotics are the fibre that feeds those bacteria — found in garlic, oats, bananas, chicory root and Jerusalem artichoke.

You need both. Probiotics bring the good guys in; prebiotics keep them thriving.

A Day That Works for Your Gut

Not a strict protocol — just a gentle rhythm:

Morning Start with a glass of water. Add a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to your porridge or smoothie.

Lunch Build your plate around plants. Include at least two different vegetables plus a legume or whole grain.

Afternoon A small snack with natural fibre — an apple, a handful of mixed nuts, or a piece of dark chocolate (yes, really — it feeds gut bacteria too).

Dinner Add a fermented element: a spoonful of sauerkraut alongside your meal, or finish with a small portion of natural yoghurt.

What to Watch Out For

Gut health isn't just about what you add — it's also about what you reduce:

  • 🚫 Ultra-processed foods displace the diversity your microbiome needs
  • 🍺 Excess alcohol disrupts the gut lining
  • 💊 Unnecessary antibiotics clear out good bacteria along with bad
  • ⏱️ Eating too fast — chewing slowly is genuinely one of the simplest gut hacks

The Gut-Brain Connection

Your gut and brain communicate constantly through what's called the gut-brain axis. Around 90% of serotonin — the feel-good neurotransmitter — is produced in the gut. A healthier gut doesn't just improve digestion. It can lift your mood, sharpen your focus and help you handle stress better.

Small shifts, consistent over time, reshape your microbiome more than any single superfood.
