Sixteen squares of 75% single-origin dark chocolate filled with almond butter, toasted coconut flakes and a turmeric spice mix. Sweetened with unrefined date sugar. Vegan, certified organic, hand-made in France. 320 g total.
CONTAINS ALMONDS AND COCONUT
The filling is almond butter. Almond is a named tree nut under EU allergen law, and it is an ingredient here rather than a trace. Coconut is also classified as a tree nut in some jurisdictions, though it rarely cross-reacts with true tree nuts.
If you are buying for a household or an office, the nuts are the thing to know first — ahead of the sugar figure, which is what these are usually sold on. Check the sachet for the full declaration, including any traces.
The sugar claim, examined honestly
"80% less sugar than a comparable chocolate bar" is a comparative nutrition claim, and under EU law a reduced-sugar claim has to clear at least a 30% reduction against a similar product. At around 2 g of sugar per 20 g square, this comfortably does.
Two honest qualifications, though.
Date sugar is sugar. It is dried dates ground whole, so it brings the fruit's fibre and minerals with it, which is a genuine and modest difference. Your body still metabolises the fructose and glucose as sugar, and it counts as sugar on a nutrition panel.
Less sugar does not mean fewer calories. This is the part people miss. Almond butter, coconut and cocoa butter are all fat, and fat carries more than twice the energy of sugar per gram. A low-sugar nut butter chocolate is not a low-calorie one — it is a differently composed one, and the fat and fibre make it considerably more filling, which is the real advantage.
Turmeric, honestly
It is here for flavour — warm, earthy, slightly bitter — and it works very well with coconut. We are not going to attach a health story to it. Curcumin is poorly absorbed, the amounts in a chocolate are small, and there are no authorised EU health claims for turmeric.
The list of what is not in it
No artificial sweeteners, no sugar alcohols, no added inulin, no artificial flavours or colours, no soy lecithin, no palm oil. That is a genuinely short and unusual ingredient list for a filled chocolate, and it is the real reason to buy these.
The absent inulin is worth noticing: a great many "low sugar" products use it as a bulking fibre, and it is one of the most reliable causes of bloating and wind there is.
