A plant- and mineral-based fabric softener from ATTITUDE, formulated for babies' laundry.
Why baby laundry is treated differently, and it is not sentimentality. Infant skin is genuinely different: the stratum corneum is thinner, the skin barrier is still maturing through the first year, and the surface-area-to-body-weight ratio is far higher than an adult's, so any residue in contact with skin represents a proportionally larger exposure. Babies are also in contact with the same fabric — sleepsuits, blankets, muslins — for most of twenty-four hours a day. A laundry product's residue is one of the more persistent chemical exposures in a young child's life, which is why fragrance load and formulation genuinely matter here more than they do for an adult's shirts.
One important safety exception, and it applies to every fabric softener. Do not use softener on flame-retardant children's sleepwear. The coating that makes fabric feel soft can compromise the flame-retardant treatment, and sleepwear regulations exist for a reason. Check the label of the garment, not the bottle.
And the other three things softener should never touch: towels, where the water-repellent film is the commonest cause of towels that stop absorbing; microfibre, which cleans by capillary action; and any waterproof or technical fabric, where the film blocks the membrane. On cotton bedding, muslins and sleepsuits, it does exactly what it says.
The genuinely useful advice about new baby clothes: wash them before first use, always. New textiles carry finishing agents, sizing and dye residues from manufacture, and a first wash removes most of it. That is more consequential than which softener you choose.
And an honest one: if a baby has eczema or reactive skin, the best laundry decision is usually to remove products rather than add gentler ones — an unscented detergent, no softener, and an extra rinse cycle. Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse compartment softens and removes detergent residue without leaving any coating at all.
