What limescale is, and why acid is the only thing that removes it. Limescale is calcium carbonate, precipitated out of hard water when it evaporates or is heated. It is a mineral deposit, not dirt — which is why no amount of detergent, scrubbing or elbow grease shifts it: surfactants lift oil and soil, and calcium carbonate is neither. Acid dissolves it, converting the carbonate into a soluble salt and releasing carbon dioxide. That fizz you sometimes see is the reaction happening.
Which means contact time, not effort, is what works. The commonest mistake is spraying and immediately scrubbing. Spray it on, leave it for five to ten minutes so the acid can actually dissolve the deposit, and then wipe. Heavy deposits want a cloth soaked in the product and laid over them, so the surface stays wet instead of drying out in two minutes. Scrubbing hard achieves very little and scratches chrome and enamel.
Two warnings that genuinely matter.
Never mix any acidic cleaner with bleach. Acid plus sodium hypochlorite releases chlorine gas, which is dangerous in an enclosed bathroom and has caused real injuries. Do not use them one after another on the same surface either — rinse thoroughly in between, or better, do not combine the two products at all.
Never use it on natural stone. Marble, travertine, limestone and many polished stone surfaces are themselves calcium carbonate — chemically the same material as the limescale. An acid cleaner does not distinguish between them; it etches the stone permanently, leaving dull patches that cannot be polished out. The same applies to some terrazzo and to unsealed grout.
And the preventive habit: limescale forms where water is left to evaporate. A squeegee or a quick wipe of the shower screen after use prevents more scale than any product removes.
