Soft organic fruit gums in the shape of elves, owls, butterflies and other woodland creatures, from HEY YUM!, a young Danish company set up to make sweets that are recognisably sweets but with an honest ingredient list.
Please read this first — they are not vegan
Magic Forest contains organic gelatine and 5% honey. It is therefore suitable for neither vegans nor vegetarians. This matters because a great deal of what an organic shop sells is one or both, and it would be easy to assume. HEY YUM! do make vegan varieties — ask us, or check the pack — but this is not one of them.
What they are made of
Glucose syrup, sugar, gelatine, honey (5%), citric acid, fruit and plant concentrates — apple, carrot, blackcurrant, elderberry, raspberry — natural flavourings, spirulina extract and carnauba wax as a glaze.
The point is the colour and flavour. Every colour in the bag comes from fruit, vegetables or algae: the greens from spirulina, the oranges from carrot, the reds and purples from berries. No azo dyes, no titanium dioxide, no artificial flavourings. Honey supplies part of the sweetness and gives them their particular rounded, slightly floral taste.
Being honest about it
These are sweets. Glucose syrup and sugar are the first two ingredients, and organic sugar behaves in the body exactly as any other sugar does. What HEY YUM! have done is remove the artificial colourings and flavourings and use real fruit — which is a genuine improvement, and not the same thing as making sweets healthy. Enjoy them as a treat.
Note
Honey is not suitable for children under twelve months. Made in Denmark. 100 g.
