What an empty bottle may not be sold on

Roll-ons like this are often listed with a suggestion to use them "for very localized application (pimples, temples in case of migraine, bruises, bumps)". You will not read that here. This is an empty container, and an empty container cannot be sold on the strength of the conditions someone might treat with it — spots, migraine and bruises are all medical, and no such claim is permissible. What we can tell you is what the bottle is and how to use it well.

Why amber glass, and why a steel ball

Amber glass blocks ultraviolet and most visible light. That matters more than it sounds: light is one of the three things that oxidise essential oils (with heat and air), and oxidised oil is not merely weaker — it is more likely to irritate skin than fresh oil. Citrus and pine oils in particular become sensitisers as they age. A clear bottle on a desk ages a blend fast.

Stainless steel rather than plastic for the ball, because essential oils are solvents. Limonene-rich citrus oils, peppermint and pine will cloud, soften and eventually degrade many plastics, and a plastic roller can leach into the blend. Steel is inert and it also feels cool on skin.

How to fill it — the arithmetic, done for you

This is the part worth having. A 5 ml roll-on holds roughly 100 drops in total, which makes the maths unusually clean:

1% dilution — 1 drop of essential oil, topped up with carrier oil. Good for the face, for sensitive skin, and for oils that need a low limit.
2% dilution — 2 drops. The standard for everyday body use in adults.
3% dilution — 3 drops. A stronger blend for a small area, occasionally.

Add the essential oil first, then fill to just below the neck with a carrier — jojoba is ideal because it barely goes rancid; sweet almond, apricot kernel and fractionated coconut all work. Press the ball in firmly, cap it, and roll it between your palms to mix.

Two rules that go with it: never fill a roll-on with neat essential oil, and always check whether the oil you are using has a lower limit of its own — bergamot, for example, should stay at or below 0.4% on skin that will see daylight.

Label it

Write on it what is in it and the date. Amber glass roll-ons look identical to one another, they end up in bags and drawers, and a blend you cannot identify is a blend you cannot use safely — particularly if someone else picks it up. Include the dilution.

Cleaning and reusing

Prise the ball out with a fingernail, a teaspoon handle or a bottle opener — it is designed to come out, though it takes a firm hand the first time.
Wash the bottle and ball in hot soapy water, then rinse with a little rubbing alcohol to shift the last of the fragrance, and let both dry completely.
Strong oils leave ghosts. Peppermint, clove, cinnamon and patchouli will haunt a bottle through several washes. If you use those, keep a dedicated bottle for them.
Dry it fully before refilling — water in an oil blend will spoil it.

Glass. Do not drop it, and do not leave it in a hot car. Keep finished blends out of reach of children.

Filling it
The ball lifts out — ease it up with a fingernail or the tip of a small knife, using a cloth so it does not fly across the room. Fill, press the ball firmly back in, and cap it.

Getting the dilution right
This is the whole point of making your own, so it is worth doing properly. A 5 ml bottle holds roughly 100 drops.

• 1% — about 1 drop of essential oil, topped up with carrier oil. For the face, or for children over six.
• 2% — about 2 drops. The standard for everyday use on adult skin.
• 3–5% — 3 to 5 drops. For short-term, localised use on a small area, on adults only.

Never fill a roll-on with neat essential oil. Roll-ons invite frequent, casual application to the same spot, which is exactly the pattern that sensitises people to oils they used to enjoy.

Choosing a carrier
Fractionated coconut is the usual choice — it is liquid, light, almost odourless and very slow to go rancid. Jojoba is excellent and even more stable. Sweet almond works well but is a tree nut, so avoid it if allergies are a consideration.

Watch out for citrus
Most expressed citrus oils are phototoxic, so a roll-on you wear on the wrists in daylight is precisely the wrong place for bergamot, lemon, lime or bitter orange. Use FCF grades or keep them off exposed skin.

Label it
With what is in it and the date. In three months you will not remember, and an unlabelled roll-on eventually gets thrown away.

Cleaning it for reuse
Warm soapy water, rinse well, then a rinse with rubbing alcohol if you can, and dry completely. Old oil residue will taint whatever you put in next.

Cool, dark, upright, capped.

How many drops of essential oil should I put in?

A 5 ml bottle is roughly 100 drops, so the arithmetic is easy: 1 drop of essential oil is about 1%, 2 drops about 2%, 5 drops about 5%. Use 1% for the face or for children over six, 2% for everyday adult use, and 3–5% only for short-term use on a small area. Top the rest up with a carrier oil.
