A note on the print: this listing is titled for one design, and the supplier's original text described a different one. Prints in this range change with the season. Please check the photographs for the design currently in stock, or ask us before ordering — we would rather confirm it than have the wrong wallet arrive.

About the RFID lining — an honest assessment

The lining works. A metallised layer in the wallet does block the radio field a contactless reader uses, and the wallet does what it says.

What we are not going to do is frighten you into wanting it. RFID wallets are almost always sold on the image of a thief walking through a crowd with a hidden reader, quietly draining cards. In practice that has turned out to be close to a non-problem:

A contactless card does not transmit a reusable number. Each tap generates a one-time cryptogram, so a captured transaction cannot simply be replayed.
The reader has to be within a few centimetres and reasonably well aligned — pockets, bags and other cards all interfere.
Contactless payments are capped per transaction and cumulatively before a PIN is demanded.
And decisively: banks and card networks report essentially no meaningful losses from contactless skimming, despite more than a decade of the technology being in every pocket. Card fraud overwhelmingly happens online, with card details stolen from databases — which an RFID wallet does nothing about.

So: it is a genuine feature and a reasonable one to have. If it gives you peace of mind, that is a real benefit. It is not the thing standing between you and your bank balance, and we would rather sell you a nice wallet than sell you a worry.

One practical consequence worth knowing: the lining can also block a card you want to use. If you tap to pay, or use a card to open a door or a barrier, take it out of the wallet.

What cork fabric is

Cork is the bark of the cork oak, Quercus suber, and the tree is not felled to get it. The bark is stripped by hand from a mature trunk and grows back; a cork oak is first harvested at around 25 years old and then roughly every nine years, for a working life of a century and a half. Portugal produces about half the world's cork, and the montado of the Alentejo is among Europe's most biodiverse farmed landscapes precisely because it depends on old standing trees.

Thin sheets shaved from a cork block and bonded to a textile backing give a material that is light, soft, warm to the touch, water-resistant and entirely vegan — and that never cracks the way leather does.

Honest limits and care

Water-resistant, not waterproof. Wipe it; do not wash it.
Cork abrades at corners and edges over years of rubbing in a bag.
Barely damp cloth, mild soap if needed, air-dry away from heat. Never machine wash, never soak, never a radiator or direct sun — heat separates cork from its backing.
No solvents, no alcohol hand gel, no leather conditioner — all three will dull or lift printing before they touch the cork.

An honest note on RFID blocking
Here is what it actually does and does not do, because a lot is claimed for it.

What it does: it prevents a contactless card being read while it is inside the closed wallet. That is real — the metallic layer in the lining blocks the radio signal.

What the risk actually is: lower than the marketing suggests. Contactless payment cards are limited to small amounts per transaction, they use one-time codes rather than transmitting your full details, and documented cases of anyone being defrauded by walking past someone with a reader are genuinely rare. Nobody can take your PIN or your card number this way.

Where it is genuinely useful: it also stops two contactless cards in the same wallet confusing a terminal, which is a real everyday annoyance. And if you carry contactless building passes or transport cards, the lining stops those being read too — which may or may not be what you want.

So: a reasonable feature, not a shield against a crime wave. We would rather tell you that.

Using the wallet
Zip-around means nothing falls out, which is the practical argument for the format. The zip is the only moving part and therefore the first thing to fail on any wallet — do not force it when the wallet is overfull, and keep grit out of the teeth.

Rain and spills
Wipe them off; cork repels water. Not waterproof — no soaking, no washing machine.

Cleaning
A barely damp cloth, air-dried away from heat. Never solvents, acetone, alcohol gel or leather conditioner, which lift the print.

Storage
Flat, uncrushed. Out of prolonged direct sun, which fades any print.

Frequently asked questions

Do I actually need RFID protection?

Honestly, less than the marketing suggests. It genuinely does stop a contactless card being read inside the closed wallet. But contactless cards are limited to small amounts per transaction, they use one-time codes rather than sending your details, and documented cases of anyone being defrauded by someone walking past with a reader are rare. Nobody can take your PIN or card number this way. It is a reasonable feature, not a shield against a crime wave.

Is there anything else the lining is good for?

Yes, and it is arguably the better argument: it stops two contactless cards in the same wallet confusing a payment terminal, which is a genuine everyday annoyance. Note that it will also block contactless building passes and transport cards — which may or may not suit you.

What prints are available?

Check the product images for the current options, and tell us which you would like when ordering — the range changes.

Is it waterproof?

Water-resistant rather than waterproof. Rain and spills wipe off thanks to suberin in cork's cell walls; do not soak it or machine-wash it.

What tends to fail first?

The zip, as on any wallet — it is the only moving part. Do not force it when the wallet is overfull, and keep grit out of the teeth.

How do I clean it?

A barely damp cloth, air-dried away from heat. Never solvents, acetone, alcohol hand gel or leather conditioner — all of them lift the printed surface.
