How conditioner actually works — and why it is cleverer than it looks
Conditioner is built on cationic surfactants: molecules carrying a positive electrical charge.
Here is why that matters. Hair keratin carries a slight negative charge, and damaged hair carries considerably more of it — bleaching, heat and friction all increase it. Positively charged conditioning molecules are electrostatically attracted to negative sites, so conditioner deposits itself preferentially on the most damaged parts of your hair and largely passes over the healthy parts.
It targets itself. That is genuinely elegant, and it explains why conditioner improves damaged ends far more noticeably than it does fresh growth at the roots.
The same charge also neutralises the static that makes damaged hair repel itself and stand apart — which is a large part of what we perceive as frizz.
Sea buckthorn
One of the more remarkable plants used in cosmetics: the berry is unusually rich in vitamin C — several times that of an orange by weight — along with carotenoids, vitamin E and palmitoleic acid, one of the few plant sources of a fatty acid that also occurs in human skin. The oil is deep orange, and that colour is the carotenoids.
Using it properly
Mid-lengths to ends. Never the scalp. This is the single most common mistake, and it is the main cause of hair that goes flat and greasy quickly. Your scalp already produces conditioner of its own; the ends are the part that needs help.
Squeeze the water out first. Conditioner applied to dripping hair is diluted before it can bind, so squeeze your hair out with your hands before applying.
Leave it a minute or two, then detangle with a wide-tooth comb while it is in.
Rinse with cool water. It helps the cuticle lie flat, which is what shine actually is.
